I’m torn over the new adaptation:
- Baz Luhrmann’s movies are gorgeous; visually stunning, and the soundtracks are never too shabby either.
- Although Leo has proven himself as a serious actor since Titanic, he’s no Robert Redford.
- Tobey Maguire?! Nope. That pallid complexion and simpering smirk remind me how excited I am that they replaced his Spider-Man with the far superior Andrew Garfield.
- BUT! Where Maguire goes wrong Carey Mulligan is sure to make up for it.
I’ll return to F. Scott in a while; his short stories are arguably better than his novels (I’ve got “The Offshore Pirate” on my mind).
What would Fitzgerald think?
“He was a modernist,” Mr. Luhrmann said. “He was very influenced by the cinema.”
Cue groans/shrieks of delight…
